On Sunday 30th April, Fife AC is hosting the 2023 Lomonds Junior Hill Race as part of Scottish Athletics Junior Hill Running League (the full list of races in the league can be found here: https://www.scottishhillrunners.uk/Juniors2.aspx
The races are as follows:
- U20 (born 2004–2006) (c.8.6k, 300m ascent) 12.30pm start: See course map ABCDEFGBCDEFGBCDEFGBA
- U17 (born 2007-2008) (c.5.8k, 200m ascent) 12.30pm start: See course map ABCDEFGBCDEFGBA

The event will also be a key selection race for the male and female Scotland teams for the WMRA International Youth Cup, to be held on 27th May, Annecy, France, open to athletes born in 2006 or 2007. In the Lomonds Junior Races, the first two male and female athletes born in 2006 or 2007 to reach point B for the third time in their race (whether they are racing in the U20 or U17 races) will be offered selection for the WMRA race, with the balance of the team being selected on current form in the trial race and/or similar races.
There will also be a race (c.2.25k, 100m ascent) for runners born in 2013 or after, with those born in 2015 or later to be accompanied by an adult). Midday start. See course map ABCDEFDCBA
Registration opens at 10.00am, at the Purin Hill car park (as in previous years), near East Lomond, (the car-park is one mile up the hill midway off the Falkland road A912). No entry fee, and a snack and drink will be provided for all runners. We have been lucky with the weather on race day before, but just in case, be sure to bring plenty of warm and waterproof clothing, as there is nowhere to hide. All races start and finish near the car park, and ascend East Lomond, with routes varying according to age. The courses are suitable for hill shoes or trainers, but not for spikes. All routes will be marked and marshalled.
Results
For the first time in its history, race day had some quite poor weather conditions, wet underfoot and with limited visibility, so it was tremendous to see runners from more than twenty clubs take their places on the start line. There were some gutsy performances on the slippery surfaces, including one or two tumbles. Many thanks indeed to the team of race officials, marshals and First Aiders for their work up in the mist, and special congratulations to Jessica Taylor of Edinburgh AC for knocking 7 seconds off the old record for the U17 female race, which had stood for 8 years.
