Fife AC athletes played a major part as the Kingdom Athletics team got off to a winning start at the National Development Northern Premier (Davison 2) Junior League at Pitreavie boosted by 13 individual wins and six relay victories. 

Kirkcaldy sprinter Callum Mitchell won the under 17’s 100m clocking 12.27 seconds before anchoring the 4 x 100m relay to victory in 46.81 seconds as well as a stint in the winning 4 x 4000m relay (3:51.18). Over the longer distances Bruce Millar, Kirkcaldy, was a runaway winner of the under 20 men’s 2,000m steeplechase in 6 minutes 33.34 seconds with Zach Delaney, Cellatdyke, the B winner – 7:21.44. 

Zach earned more vital points over the flat 3,000m finishing 2nd in 9 minutes 46.66 seconds with Ewan Paton, Glenrothes, winning the B race in 10:28.83. Kirkcaldy athlete Euan Berry won the under 20 men’s 1500m B race clocking 4:36.77 while over 400m James Pennycook placed 3rd (57.27).

For the female section 1500m top points went to Kirkcaldy’s Stephanie Pennycook winning the A race in 5:06.46 also claiming maximum points in the 1500m steeplechase where GB junior internationalist Halina Rees, Crail, clocked a winning 5 minutes 32.13 seconds to go 5th in the UK rankings. Halina followed up with 2nd place in the 400m hurdles (67.56) before rounding off the day anchoring the 4 x 400m relay quartet to victory.

In the field St Andrews University student Vitalija Laureckyte, Lithuania, debuted for Kingdom with a winning javelin throw of 35.31m, 2nd place in the shot (10.26m) and 3rd place in the discus (21.59).

Corryn Christie, Tayport, had a busy day in the sprints – 5th in the 400m (70.37) as well as helping the team to 3rd in the 4 x 100m relay and 2nd in the 4 x 300m relay. Laura Gibson, Kinross, continues to improve her 800m times finishing 4th in 2:36.24.

Fife AC hosted the Scottish Junior Hill Running Races over the East Lomond last Sunday where club athletes rose to the occasion.

Logan Rees, Crail, won the under 17 men’s race in a record 15 minutes 06 seconds for the 3.5 mile course while younger brother Tristan prevailed in the under 15 boy’s race with a record 15 minutes 06 seconds for the 1.75 mile route. Kinghorn’s Gavin McWhinnie made his hill debut in the under 12’s race placing 2nd only seven seconds off the lead.

Ailsa Cruickshanks, Lundin Links, served up a third victory for Fife AC winning the under 17 women’s race timed at 38 minutes 37 seconds for the 3.5 mile course.

Elsewhere at the weekend three Fife members completed the 53 mile Highland Fling Race from Milngavie to Tyndrum. Cupar training group members Val Herkes, Sandra Mitchell, Wendy Ritchie and Anne Whiteford with Susan Bayne as support crew completed the 53 miles as a relay team.

A wind-swept Ravenscraig Park one mile at Kirkcaldy last week was won by Zach Delaney. Zach and under 20 colleague Ewan Paton went through the half mile marker in 2 minutes 13 seconds with Zach grinding out a five seconds advantage against the strong headwinds to the finish.

Over 45 Fife veteran Lorraine Brown followed up her win at the Crystal Palace Parkrun 5km the previous Saturday placing 8th overall, first female equalling her personal best of 5 minutes 55 seconds.
